Summary

This game is pretty entertaining. The one thing that has me baffled is the fact that although it is called Mace Griffin BOUNTY HUNTER, i found myself just running around killing everone, not hunting anybody except for the occasional boss. I think the game should have been called Mace Griffin: Obliterator. Despite all of the negative things in my review, you'll be surprised at my rating!

Sound

The voices were all the same. Each speices had its own voice. Valekiens: High pithced, very annoying, makes it fun to kill them. Jaldari:Low pitched, supposed to scare me, makes me laugh insted. Human: Either a perverted russians voice or a talkative american voice. The music, which there are only about 5 songs, is very repetetive. I liked how it got louder when enemies were around though. The weapon sounds were okay, but not liud enough. The sniper rifle does not sound like a real silenced weapon, it just mimicks all other games. A real silenced weapon is still kinda loud. The explosions were the best part of both the graphics and sound.

Gameplay

The AI could have been better, since most of the time they just sat out in the open, cursing me. As for the weapons, KICK ASS!!!!!!! My favorite was the plasma machine gun. For me, i found the game a little too short for my taste, considering i beat halo 2 in 3 days. Also, the physics were a little off. Getting hit with a rocket directly doesn't nessecerily make you explode into chunks, more like just blow a ton of body parts off of you. The space missions were a cool feature, but there could have been a few more missle varieties, and maybe one more laser. The shield is utterly useless, and health went down a little too fast. Also, the cutscenes kinda sucked. The characters had no original movements. It was almost like after one cutscene the game just takes the characters and places them in a different place, with the same movements. Also, when some of the characters talked, their mouths did not move. The electro gun thingy is useless until the last few levels, when you fight the watchers. The levels seemed too repetetive. It was like when you finished a level, before the next one started, it was taken and changed a little bit. Also, mace ran a little too fast when crouched. I also noticed my enemies could roll when i could not. Also, i notcied that when a door opened with an enemy on the other side, he would always know i was coming. He would fire when the door was about halfway open and he would always hit me. One thing that bothered me was that enemies were so tough in the actual game, but in the cutscenes, when people got shot, they died from one pistol shot. Or when danzig shot krugo, Jaldari always take a ton of hits, yet he dies in one hit. Pathetic. The enemies were very repetetive, like the same guy and his friends keep dying and teleporting to the next room. The damage was unrealistic. I don't care what kind of armor you have on, one rocket kills you. It does not knock you down for a second. As for the levls, way too linear. I found only several places were there was an alternate path.

Sound

The music and sound effects are acceptable. Some of the triggered combat musics tracks do get a little tedious over time. The weapon sounds are decent, but nothing we FPS fans haven't heard before. The one area i was a little dissapointed by was the use of dolby digital surround. This is where Halo clearly has the advantage. There just isn't enough directional use of the surround channels. It is pretty much all ambient environmental effects coming through the rears.

Gameplay

There are 2 areas of gameplay: First person shooting and space flight combat. FPS: Standard FPS gameplay. The controls are similar to Halo or MOHFL. The controller setup has many alternate settings in the menu. There is an addition of selectable lock-on aiming for some of the weapons. This comes in handy when you are being shot at by multiple enemies. The levels are pretty much linear with varying objectives. This might turn some off, but i didn't mind that much. There are many different ways to use the environments and weapons to clear a room of baddies and that is always. fun. Weapons: There are 14 weapons to choose from. The weapons are the basic types found in most FPS i.e. pistol, shotgun, machine gun, rocket launcher etc. Each weapons has 2 firing modes. Some are cooler than others. My favorite is the Sonic Shock Cannon. I won't say what is does, you'll have to find out. You can also utilize remote ceiling mounted guns in certain places and stationary guns in others. I always enjoy taking control of a robotic gun and laying waste. Saves ammo to. Space Flight Combat: This game was done by the folks who did the colony wars series for the PS1. The space combat is fun, but if there was more to do than just shoot fighters and other ships i.e. more objectives this part would have been cooler. Also, the intigration between FPS and Space combat is done decently. Some have said that the space combat detracts from the FPS but i liked both. NPC AI: This is where the ga

Sound

The sound effects are okay but the enemies comments get monotonous. Also, Henry Rollins' performance seems phoned in. It sounds like he doesn't care.

Gameplay

It's really a shame. This game has so many good qualities but too many bad ones. The FPS levels fun but are plagued with many flaws including a horrible AI. It gets better as the levels advance but in the first few, you can literally shoot one person and the person standing right next to him won't react. Also, the game is very linear. You're kept on the right path by blocked passageways and locked doors. This is just lazy game design. It's also marred by idiotic and annoying missions based on babysitting a certain character or doing something before the time runs out. Also, the lighting levels are off. There may be parts where you have to descend through a trap door or duck into a crawlspace but you can't see the openings because it's too dark. The real pain comes in between FPS levels. You're forced to do these flight missions. The ship is too difficult to control and your foes move like lightning. By the time you're finished your thumbs are broken. The cherry on top of this sundea of crap is having to fly through these rectangles before you land. Nothings better than surviving a geuling battle only to end up getting killed trying to land. Thanks guys.

Summary

First let me say that the game I'm reviewing does not have the same cover as the on above. The one I have is a black Label game.
I rented this game a month or so ago and after playing Wolfenstein thru, I wasn't crazy about Mace Griffin.
I found the game at a place for $25.00 and any half decent FPS is worth that to me, so I picked it up.
Now everybody seems to have a weird Halo fetish and every game on Xbox is compared to Halo. I'm gonna tell you now that there are games that have been released that are far superior to Halo.
I do not confuse graphics with game content as soooo many who review tend to do. If a game has a kool machine or building or badguy or whatever that I've never seen or thought of, does that make good graphics? Of course not. Detail and resolution makes great graphics. Does Halo have great graphics...Yep! Are there other games with great graphics? You bet there are.
Enough with the Halo groupies already!
Do other games have kool music like Halo? Da Da Da Daaaaa, Da Da Da Daaaaa. Well maybe not, but there are many fine games that deserve to be judged on their own merit and not compared to a game that clearly captivated so many people.
Mace Griffin is a game with clearly superior graphics. The detail is awsome. The weapons are killer and after playing this game a while and giving it some time, I have come to the conclusion that Griffin is superior to Halo in the graphics dept.
Griffin is a newer game than Halo and it should have better graphics.
Does Griffin get your heart pumping like Halo? Nope, but I have a feeling it's the sound in H that has alot to do with that. Da Da Da Daaaaaa.
Try turning the sound down on H and see what I mean.
However it is preferable to me anyway to have enemys that speak english rather than just say, Wa Wa Wa Wa for the most part.

I am still waiting for a FPS to come out where the higher difficulty level isn't simply a "you die faster tweak" but rather the enemy should have increased intellegence. Halo also suffered from that flaw.
Personally, I like having a beavy of weapons which allows the player to be involved in different types of combat. Halo's 2 weapon limitation always seemed to be unnesscary.
Griffin isn't supposed to be Halo. Griffin is like a mix between Halo and Red Faction with flashes of Rouge Leader stired in.
Is Mace Griffin an enjoyable game? Absolutely
I have about a dozen or so FPS for consoles and Mace Griffin is right there next to Wolfenstein, TS2, Red Faction 2, Metroid Prime and yes H.
Does griffin have things that could have been done differently? Sure, but so do all those I mentioned.
If you're looking for a FPS that in the same league as those I mentioned, then you'll like Griffin.
Again this is the Black Label game I review.

Sound

Sound just stinks, have of the time the music overlaps the dialoge in the game, so when someone is telling you were to go, you might not hear it.

Gameplay

When playing a game, the one thing I truely hate is a game that starts out really easy, and then after a couple of levels the diffculty just gets stupid. Now don't get me wrong, I love playing hard games(Halo on legendary, fighting the ruby and emerald weapons on FFVII), but I hate games that in order to finish you have to use a cheat code. Hey if you can finish the game without one, more power to ya, but when i'm playing a space level and I have been shotting at this guy for 20 minutes, and nothing is happening, then the game gets boring. Also for a game that was delayed, it still had some glitches, espically at the end, that were uncalled for( on the last level, I can't count how many times I got stuck in the wall while I was trying to fly that ship). Also I love FPS, but the one thing I hate about them are ones that you have to use the jump to get past a level. Its cool to use when you are playing against someone, but as far as in the game, just take it out. And while I'm at it, whats up with all the timers. That just means a trail and error until you get it right. One more thing while I'm on my soap box, the developers sure do love snipers. Really when you get to the end of the game, everyone is a sniper(but by that I believe you would have put in the code, so it really doesn't matter). Oh yeah almost forgot, the AI in this game is stupid, unless it has a sniper rifle. I could walk right up to the guy, and have him not move until I shot him.

Sound

Great sound effects, and 3d sounds, but limited ambient dynamic sound track. (songs get repetative and annoying after about 6 hours of gameplay, which can be set to zero however.)

Weapon sound sim is awsome however.

Gameplay

Extremely challenging, taking of 30+ fighters in less than 5 minutes, seems very un-realistic (enemy shields very weak) and dumb, was expecting more of a RPG, space simulation, as originaly adverstized. ( yes there are random time limits in majority of linear mission that become very annoying )Its can be cool however if your into that kind of gameplay, and does make for a different and chanllenging gameplay experience however. (should have provided a way to turn timelimits off or on, to allow for replay at later time ) maybe a cheat outthere however.

Weapon system with limited ammo, and reload times, is very well done and realistic. Ship model (ranger ship) is very well done and believable. Could be a ship like that 400 years from now :)

Game is so hard the first time that using the god mode cheat makes it more fun and doable, (I do thnk the developers for providing the INV cheat ) L trigger, R trigger, L trigger, R trigger, A, 2(B), A, X, Y.

Sound

Nice orchestral sounding music.(ala RTCW)

The usual dolby digital surround sound mix.(with outrageous bass during the space parts)

Satisfyingly lethal sounding weapon effects.

Passable voice acting from Henry Rollins and co.

Overall higher than average marks. The only severe blemish being the practically inaudible speech in some of the flight battle sequences.

Gameplay

For the most part you're dealing with Halo/Red Faction style fps carnage with a decided emphasis on sniper confrontation.(for born stealth killers like myself this is just fine) Mace deals up an unusually large amount of enemies to plow through, but thankfully adopted Halo's recharging shield set-up to keep the deck stacked in your favor. It's mostly superb, marred only by occasionally vague objectives and the developer's cruel fondness for sudden time limits. A lot of critics have been rather hard on the space shooter bits, but they're honestly about 20% of total game play, and aren't all that bad besides.

Summary

Hey! I'm usually not too big on posting reviews because anyone with a contrary opinion takes it upon himself to flame and spam you because you disagree with them. However, Mace is taking such a beating from reviewers I need to at least speak my peace to those with discerning tastes.
First of all, forget about what those supercillious pussies at EGM wrote about this. I've been an avid EGM reader since the ol' days of Ed Semrad and the Famicom, but now they have a whole new crew of whiney pussies who yam about everything and anything that isn't revolutionary or handed to them by Hideo Kojima or Miyamoto-san. Mace Griffin is fast-paced, challenging, and very polished. Yes, there are areas that are overtly rough, but what game doesn't have weak spots? People bitch that there's no auto-aim in Mace....first of all, you don't need to be "hard-core" to play without auto-aim, and if you do rely on it, then go put on a fresh skirt. I've never heard of anything so ridiculous...why not have auto-fire and auto-objective-completion, too? Anyway, Mace DOES have a form of auto-aim...you click the thumb-stick in to toggle between "targeting" mode and non-targeting mode. It's actually a pretty neat effect, too, reminiscent of Virtua Cop or Time Crisis as it targets.
I also hear people yamming there aren't enough types of enemies, and the ones that are there repeat the same sh*t too much. Yeah, the same can be said for Halo (how many types of enemies does Halo have?) and Red Faction (how many hackneyed "miner scum" remarks do you hear?) Oh, and people bitch about dumb enemies in Mace....yes, there is sketchy A.I. at points, but you're telling me you've never shot an enemy in Goldeneye or Timesplitters or Halo that just stood there like a post? Please.
I should mention, however, that I like challenging games, so the more a game demands precision from the player, the better. Games like Maximo, GunValkyrie, Contra: Shattered Soldier, etc. are all great games in my book so use that as a guide. Mace isn't anywhere near as "hard" as any of those games, anyway :)
Please read below in Gameplay for the pros and cons of Mace...

Sound

The sound provides very good ambient tone. It punctuates the action well for the most part. Even though Rollins does the voice, the in-game music is orchestral, which suits the game better anyway (although they managed to squeeze one of his better songs (called "Shine," maybe?)into the attract mode intro. Your opinion of the game will not be swayed either way.

Gameplay

Areas where Mace is weak: borrows HEAVILY from Halo, annoying flying parts, no multi-player, no co-op (this is probably the biggest let-down for me, cause co-op FPS's like Wolfenstein and Halo are a blast), repetative "bounty hunting" as the story dictates, and probably a few other points I'm forgetting...What's strong in Mace is the musical score, the controls (they are tight and responsive, contrary to what other babies say), the weapons and their secondary functions (e.g. the flashbombs are amusing), the sci-fi feel, creative bounty gigs (all you atheists out there will love the Temple of Virtual Light or whatever it's called),and a lot of other minor things that are dismissable by themselves, but together create the appearance of a slick, polished, well-programmed game (it took long enough..it better be). Usually I get really pissed when lazy developers force you to pick from a handful of pre-set configs, but Mace's programmers were smart enough to permit all of the possible control stick set-ups,with the triggers as primary and secondary, so it's a sad state of affairs if you can't make do. One final point...I really love the people who cry that Mace's enemies move unrealistically. Yeah, well, they may not move as fluidly as Red Faction's soldiers, or animate with all the faux motion-capsuredness of Splinter Cell, but you won't notice.

Summary

Aside from Joe, who I think is the review below mine, the rest of the reviews are ridiculous. Talk about overhyped. First, the controls. Very loose and unadjustable. Everyone has a different comfort level, so not making all button configurations on a FPS is unforgivable these days. And there isn't an auto aim! Fine, you're so hardcore you don't want the help, well I do. This is the reason I play 90% of my FPS on PC. There I don't want help as a mouse is so much more accurate. But with a controller, more of us than not like a little auto aiming help. On the plus side, the framerate is steady and the action almost Doom level as wave after wave attack you. But the major problem of clipping is rampant and I believe there are only about five different enemies. They seem to be running a clone factory. You'll feel like Neo being attacked by Agent smith in many spots, as the dozens of bad guys coming at you are all the same model. You can tell the developers were going for a Halo rip off with some space battles thrown in. The controls are the same (except not as responsive and tight) and Mace even has the same shield that regenerates when he stops moving. But the AI is half of what Halo has and it's a two year old game. And the graphics are plain and washed out. Textures are okay, better than most multiplatform releases, but not impressive all the same. The story is typical and boring, filled with old video game cliches. And the levels are uninspiring. You'll feel like you've played this game before. And lest I forget, (Oh, good, I managed to use the word lest) the space battles have a huge flaw. Such a flaw, they are now useless to play. Just fly out, stop moving and take aim. By staying still the enemy miss you, strangely enough. There isn't anything horrible about the game, it's just very blah. The definition of average FPS. Nothing special. With no online here, save your money or go buy Castle Wolfenstein, a much better game. Rent only if you feel you must play every FPS that comes out, but don't buy. I did and we don't need any more sales giving lazy developers the idea we'll accept any half hearted effort thrown our way.

Sound

Way too many repeated lines from the enemy. An hour in I wanted to turn the gun on myself, hearing everyone repeat themselves over and over. Oh, and some of the voices occasionally skip, not in the cinematics, but during the game. Henry Rollins acting in this is (shockingly) worse than a Resident Evil voiceover. Just don't bother with this game, simply because there are so many better FPS on Xbox. I waste my time so you don't have to!

Gameplay

It's like Halo without the tightness. Like Kmart Halo. Like Vanilla Ice is to Slim Shady, the gameplay is in Mace Griffin to Halo. Sure, they both get the job done, but one is so half the talent, you can't help but laugh at them and wish they'd go find they're own personality. Uh, okay, what I just said made sense in my head, but maybe I lost everyone. The controls are better than some games, but still not up to snuff.

Sound

Mace is voiced by henry rollins(a well known comedian) and he does a very good job, as the voice of mace. Sometimes he's some what unconvincing, but for the most part, he does a solid job. The rest of the characters are voice fairly well, all in all the voice acting found in this game is better then 70% of the voice acting found in most games. The sounds effects are also well done, each gun has it's own destintive sound, the only thing lacking is the music, theres nothing memorable about the music.

Gameplay

The controls are set up like any fps found on the xbox. Left stick to move, right stick to aim. Right trigger to fire, D-pad to switch weapons(you get the idea) The only problem I see with the game is the enemies, sometimes they act very realistic, like ducking behind boxes, walls ect, but other times you'll walk into a room, and stair straight at the enemy, and they won't even move. The A.I acts smart, more then it actually acts stupid, but it still takes away from the game.

Warthog(the developer of mace) borrowed heavily from Halo, and I mean heavily. From the look of the enemies, to the way the hud, and crosshair look. The game even has the same type of shield, that regenerates itself after 5 secounds, but the game does try to separate it's self from Halo, and other fps for that matter. Inbetween levels, Mace has to fly aircrafts, to get from space station, to space station. These levels are well done, but it still feels like fps, so in all honesty, the flying missions don't really change the pace of the game all that much.

All in all, I think Mace is a very good game. I would go as far, and say Mace is the best single player fps since Halo, and no fps fan should miss Mace GrIffin.

Summary

Great game. Probably the best FPS since Halo. I apologize for my terrible typing on my review of Soldier of Fortune. But some idiot wanted to blasted me because I trashed the game, and why? Because it was garbage. So now onto better and brighter things....Mace Griffin..worth the long wait? Perhaps...I can just never understand these really long delays sometimes. But a great game, even if its a Halo wannabe, and its obvious it tries to, but a good job doing so. Plays very similar to Halo, but as far as the games personality and mood? Red Faction 1 written all over it.....which is a very good thing. The spaceship fights are very fun. Ive played this game for 5 hours and Im only on the 5 mission. The levels are huge and the game is very, very challenging. And if you love sniping? Then this game is a must. Well worth the $50. Then again, I dont belive any game is worth $50 for a cd but we really dont have a choice now do we.

Sound

Excellent score, late on in the game a lot of the music sounds like the opening soundtrack to the Matrix. Gives the game a cool mood. Voice overs arent so bad either.

--in a nutshell, I have been playing this game for at least 5 hours now and Im not close to being halfway through. My only gripe about this title is that there is no multiplayer. But if you are looking for a great solid, and very challenging first person shooter, look no further. Steer clear of Soldier of Fortune 2 and get ready to be the coolest intergalactic bounty hunter since Boba Fett.

Gameplay

Your standard FPS with a strong Red Faction mood to it. Why I say that is because some of the underground and mining levels are simlar, except they look much cooler here. The spaceships fights are very cool graphically & the new 'lighting' technology they use for this game is excellent.
